Doors

Custom wood doors, built and finished in our own shop.

Built rather than ordered, and finished here before it ships — including the dentil-shelf detail that makes a Craftsman door read as one.

D.W. Ross supplies and builds doors; the contractor doing the work installs them.

Custom door design

Most people start by asking for a door they have seen.

The better question is what the opening is and what you want it to look like. Modern, Craftsman, something that suits the house. Designing the door around that answer is what a catalog number cannot do, and it is usually where the conversation starts rather than where it ends.

The detail that reads as Craftsman

Craftsman dentil shelves.

The detail that makes a Craftsman door read as one rather than as a slab with trim. Built into the door rather than added on afterward, on a door made rather than ordered.

What the shop does with a wood door

Wood grain, glass, and a finish that ships done.

Custom wood doors

Built rather than ordered, to suit an opening or a house that no catalog door fits.

Finished before it ships

Painted or stained here, so the door arrives on site done rather than as another trade's problem.

Fiberglass, finished like wood

A stainable fiberglass door taken to a wood appearance, where the opening wants the look but not the maintenance.

Glass changed to suit

A standard slab modified for different glass: clear, obscure, decorative, or privacy where a door faces a street.

Caming and decorative leaded glass

Leaded work in a range of finishes, made up as an insulated unit rather than a single pane.

Questions we get

Custom wood and Craftsman doors, answered.

What makes a door “Craftsman style”?

The dentil shelf is the detail that makes a Craftsman door read as one rather than as a slab with trim, built into the door here rather than added on afterward.

Do you build custom wood entry doors, or only sell catalog doors?

Both. Commodity doors get ordered like anything else, and a custom wood door can be made, a slab can be modified for different glass, and the whole thing can be templated for an opening that is not square.

Can a fiberglass door be finished to look like real wood?

Yes. A stainable fiberglass door taken to a wood appearance, where the opening wants the look but not the maintenance.

Is the door finished before it arrives on site?

Painted or stained here, so the door arrives on site done rather than as another trade’s problem.

Can the glass in a custom wood door be changed?

Yes: clear, obscure, decorative or privacy glass, including caming and decorative leaded work made up as an insulated unit rather than a single pane.

Do you install the door once it is built?

D.W. Ross supplies and builds doors; the contractor doing the work installs them.
