Company

Four generations in Cleveland since 1921.

D.W. Ross Company is a family-operated building products supplier at 3195 West 63rd Street in Cleveland, Ohio, founded in 1921 and incorporated in 1972. Windows, doors, flooring, FRP and laminated panels are supplied to the job, and the contractor installs them. Insulated panel rooms and cooler, freezer and blast-freezer doors are installed by D.W. Ross or supplied material-only.

It sells to general contractors, property management companies, apartment owners and architects. Building products serve Cleveland, Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. The insulated panel and cold-storage work is primarily Ohio, and nationally when the project warrants it. The published figures are in the technical reference.

Who you talk to

Four generations in, the people who answer the phone are the people whose name is on the building. That is not a slogan about service; it is what happens when the same family has run a company since 1921.

Four generations on West 63rd Street.

1921
Charles Ross establishes the company

Unincorporated, and family-run from the first day. Charles built Vernon Stouffer’s first kitchen; the long cooler and freezer relationship with Stouffer’s that followed is where the cold-storage line began.

1972
Incorporated under Donald W. Ross

After Charles passed, Donald W. Ross renamed the company and incorporated it. The name on the building today is his.

Today
Fourth generation, Cleveland-based

Still family-operated. Kyle and Garrett, the fourth generation, are in the business now. Building products are supplied to the job; temperature controlled environments — panels, doors and floors — are supplied or installed, whichever the project needs.

Two lines of work, and where the install line falls.

Building Products

D.W. Ross supplies building products. It does not install windows, doors, flooring, FRP or laminated panels. The contractor doing that work installs them, and we help get the product right before it ships.

Insulated Panels and Doors

Insulated panels and specialty doors are sold either way: installed by D.W. Ross, or supplied material-only. Material-only does not mean on your own. On panel jobs we have supplied without installing, D.W. Ross stayed on recurring calls with the installing contractor, working through the details as they came up on site.

What has not changed.

It has always been a family business

Charles Ross started it in 1921. His son Donald incorporated it in 1972. Kyle and Garrett are the fourth generation, and they are here now.

We know the product

Not a catalog we look things up in. Product we have specified, sold and stood behind for decades. Ask a hard question on the phone and you will get a real answer.

The line keeps moving

Cold storage, windows, panels, flooring: the list has changed every generation because customers needed something different. That is the job.

You talk to the people who decide

Small company, family-run. The person who answers can usually solve it, and if they cannot, they know who can.

From the office wall

Fazio’s, Cleveland.

A wall of cold-storage doors on opening day, and the processing floor running alongside it. Both prints have hung framed in the office ever since. The work in them is the same work described on this site: an envelope that has to hold a temperature, and the doors that go in it.

From the company’s own prints

The work, as it was done.

Fifty-one photographs out of the company’s own files: ground opened and pads cut, panel walls going up outside the block, walls clad from the inside, ceilings closed, doors hung, stainless set, roofs finished above the tree line. Three carry a date printed in the corner of the frame — 23 September 1987 — and a fourth carries September 1987 with the day obscured. The rest carry no date, so none is given them here.
