Hurd double-hung parts: start with how the sash tilts.
Balances, jamb liners, tilt latches, screens and sashes for Hurd double-hung windows, with one question settled first: how does your window tilt?
D.W. Ross is an independent supplier of Hurd replacement parts. Hurd is the name of the window maker, used here only to say which windows the parts fit.
How the sash tilts, the exterior finish, and the part. Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
Start with how the sash tilts.
Hurd double-hungs tilt in two ways. A compression-tilt window has no tilt latches on top of the sash; you press on the jamb liners and the sash tilts in. An easy-tilt window has tilt latches on top of the sash, and was built after 2005.
The two use different parts, so that is the first thing we ask. After that, the exterior finish and the year settle the rest.
What fails on a double-hung.
Balances
The springs or cords that hold the sash up. A sash that falls shut, or won't stay open, has lost its balance.
Jamb liners
The tracks the sash rides in. A cracked or worn liner stops a sash from sliding or tilting.
Tilt latches
On easy-tilt windows only. The small latches on top of the sash that release it so it tilts in.
Screens
Replacement screens for double-hung windows, matched to the window.
Sashes
A whole replacement sash, for a window whose sash has been damaged.
Check the top of the sash.
Latches on top of the sash means easy-tilt. None means compression-tilt. Tell us which, and it saves a round of questions.
Questions buyers ask
How can I tell compression-tilt from easy-tilt?
Look at the top of the lower sash. Tilt latches there mean an easy-tilt window, built after 2005. No latches, and a sash that tilts when you press on the jamb liners, means compression-tilt.
My Hurd sash won't stay up. What do I need?
Usually the balances, which hold the sash up. Tell us the tilt style and the finish, and send a photo of the jamb if you can.
How do you know which part fits my window?
By four facts: the type of window or door, whether the outside is aluminum clad or primed wood, the year it was made, and the part itself. A photograph of the part, or of the window with the sash open, usually settles it. We confirm the match before anything is ordered.
Is D.W. Ross part of Hurd?
No. D.W. Ross is an independent supplier of Hurd replacement parts. Hurd is the name of the window maker and is used on this page only to say which windows the parts fit.
Do you install the parts?
No. We supply them. You or the contractor doing the work fits them. If you don't have an installer, we can recommend one from our list of trusted contractors.
Tell us how it tilts.
Window or door type, exterior finish (aluminum clad or primed wood), the year it was made or the year the house was built, and the part. A photograph of the part, or of the window, speeds it up.
