Stainless steel sliding freezer door on a spiral freezer line inside a food plant.
Cold Storage · Doors

Blast freezer and spiral freezer doors.

A blast freezer is not a colder version of the same room, and its doors are not a colder version of the same door. Blast-freezer sliding doors, personnel blast-freezer doors and doors for spiral freezer lines, each one built to the opening it closes.

Installed by our crews, or supplied material-only to the contractor on the job.

No standard door fits this opening.

Every blast-freezer door we supply is built for one opening: its size, the depth of the jamb it closes against, and the vapor seal the wall around it has to keep. A stock door fitted into that opening does not work. It frosts, binds and stops sealing.

The temperature difference across a blast-freezer door is far more severe than on a holding freezer. Spiral freezer lines put the same load on a door inside a food plant, with washdown on top. The photograph above is a stainless sliding door we put on a spiral freezer line.

What the specification has to answer.

Washdown

In a high-moisture room that is hosed down, every joint on the door and its frame is vapor sealed.

Defrost

A defrost cycle changes the pressure in the room, and that can be enough to blow a door open. Some rooms need a pressure-relief vent to keep it shut.

Inspected plants

Doors can be specified for USDA- and FDA-inspected facilities. The rules those plants answer to speak about the building: USDA's sanitation rule, 9 CFR 416.2, asks for walls, floors and ceilings that are impervious to moisture and can be cleaned and sanitized. The plant is inspected. The door is not.

A washdown room going up.

Job photographs from a food processing room that gets a heavy washdown. The panel walls and ceiling are in. No door is hung yet.

Have four answers ready.

The operating temperature inside the door and outside it, the air velocity at the opening, how often the room is washed down, and whether it is inspected, and by whom. The form below asks for each. Add the opening size and a photograph of the jamb if you have them.

Questions buyers ask

How is a blast-freezer door different from a regular freezer door?

It is built for its opening: the size, the jamb depth and the vapor-seal detail. The temperature difference across it is far more severe than in a holding freezer, so a standard door fitted into the opening does not hold up.

Why does a freezer door blow open during defrost?

Defrost changes the pressure inside the room, and the pressure can push a door open. Some rooms need a pressure-relief vent. We look at it when we specify the door.

Do you supply doors for spiral freezers?

Yes. We have put stainless sliding doors on spiral freezer lines inside food plants. Send the line, the opening and how often it is washed down.

Do you install blast-freezer doors or only supply them?

Either. Our crews install them, or we supply the door material-only to the contractor on the job and support the installation.

What do you need to quote a blast-freezer door?

Operating temperature inside and outside the door, air velocity, washdown frequency, whether the room is inspected, and the opening size. Drawings help but are not required to start.
